Dear [First Name],
Learning new things is really important in our roles as leaders. Being curious about how to become more effective and how to improve our impact is a never ending quest. This month I explore how to develop ourselves and be the leader of our own leadership development.

Leadership Development- The Leadership of Self
There’s only one way to develop ourselves as leaders. There is only one way to increase our impact personally or professionally. It’s very simple-look inside your own shoes at who you are and who you be and you will find all the answers just waiting for you to discover. And while we are at it, I think there’s only one way to go about doing it, be yourself everyone else is taken.

I could stop here because it’s all so simple. Simple but not easy. If it were easy, we would all have the job we want, with the title we think we deserve and we would be as big and impactful as our imaginations would allow us to dream. So what stops us? And why do we get so stuck, sometimes for years, trying to get from point A to B? How do we raise our promotional altitude and satisfy our internal quest for something we have not yet accomplished or obtained?
The answer remains in being the leader of ourselves. What this means is that we must do internal work where we explore why we do what we do and how we might consciously or unconsciously sabotage our success. Step two is where we then excavate and fix the behaviors getting in our way so we can get a different result; the result we actually want.
Stakeholder Interviews. I’m working with a wonderful company on the Fortune 50 list and currently conducting Executive Coaching Stakeholder Interviews. Stakeholder Interviews are 1:1 interviews that provide a rich source of insight, observation, and feedback from key individuals about the executives with whom I am working. Having someone conduct Stakeholder Interviews on your behalf who ask, what you could start doing, what you could stop doing, and overall how you could become more effective and impactful is an incredibly valuable process. This process opens a doorway for us to examine and ask ourselves the hard questions:
-
Is this really how people see me?
-
If I’m so good at that (skill), I wonder if I should re-align my day-to-day work so I can do more of it.
-
Wow, that’s a pattern I had no idea was working against me; I wonder what the best way is for me to change?
Self-Leadership.
If it is all in our hands, then where do we start to look inside and shift our behavior? Here are 5 things you can do right now to take your leadership into your own sweet hands.
