To be an effective coach, it is important to have regular formal meetings with each of your direct reports weekly, bi-monthly or monthly. this will depend on your time constraints, need for information and development goals you have established for the individual. Each employee's need or desire to spend quality time with you should also be considered. Most employees feel they need face time with their boss on a somewhat regular basis.
To prepare for these meetings, think about what area of performance, learning or satisfaction (fulfillment) would be important to discuss and does it relates strategically to their professional development and the growth of the business.
A proactive approach allows you to strategically steer the conversation towards issues your find important rather than receiving a status update.
In addition to being well prepared effective coaches:
"Coaching is unlocking a person’s potential to maximize their own performance… A manager’s task is simple-to get the job done and grow his/her staff." John Whitmore, author of Coaching for Performance; Growing People, Performance and Purpose
