It seems like I was born into leadership.

I have been fascinated with what it takes to be a leader and grow a business since I have been a little girl. Growing up, my dad and my grandfather owned and operated a leather tannery in Taunton, Massachusetts. In our house, holiday dinners were always a special time for gathering the family all together. They were especially sweet for me because my dad let me hang out with the men while they talked about business after the wonderful dinner my mother or grandmother cooked. The routine was often the same. When dinner was over, the men retired to the den to talk business. I remember being quiet as a mouse so as not to get kicked out, as I listened with utter fascination to the hours of business conversation about the tannery, the management of the business, the employees and the challenges they faced.

These early childhood memories shaped me as a business woman. I am still as fascinated today as I was many years ago as to what it takes to lead, manage and grow a successful business enterprise.

I now have 20 plus years of experience working with top executives in hundreds of companies and have found that anyone can be given a title that puts them at the top of their company’s organizational chart. I have dedicated my professional career to helping companies hone their talent at the top, build a bench of top talent under the top tier, and create a management team that is skilled, competent and aligned from a leadership perspective.

One day my dad took me on a tour of the tannery. As we walked, he said hello and called each person by name as we passed. I asked him if he was the boss over everyone. He replied, “It’s not your fancy title that has people look up to you and work hard for you. It’s who you are on the inside, how you treat people and your business smarts that makes it all work.” This advice is as valid today as it was then. Companies must grow their talent as if their business depends on it; because it does.
