Transferred to Talent Development

The Challenge

For 20 years, Susan was an HR executive at an insurance company. When the firm went through a series of mergers and acquisitions, Susan’s job was to lay-off employees whose services were no longer needed. Not long into that role, Susan had the realization that she, too, was likely to be among those laid off. As expected, the day came when her services were no longer needed, and Susan found herself looking for a job for the first time in 20 years.

The Solution

Susan attended a Vision Quest Consulting retreat, which provided a structured format to help her determine what to do next. Through workshops and exercises at the event, it became clear that her skills were transferable, and she could explore continuing to work in HR but in a different (and more challenging) capacity. She developed a plan of action and the confidence to reach beyond the world that she knew. Her peers from the retreat expanded her network, opening new doors and making the job hunt less daunting.


Susan used her depth of knowledge, extensive experience and newfound confidence to convince a hiring manager that she could be an effective Talent Development Manager. She now works for a healthcare company, optimizing employee performance and satisfaction. She has a 5-minute commute instead of a 90-minute commute, and she is thrilled to have more time to spend with her family.
